Commando Tactics Not the least interesting sidelight on the. arrest of the two young Maori escapees from the Waeroa prison, farm by Sergeant Farrell last week-end. was the minner in which one of the prisoners endeavoured to use commando tactics to prevent his arrest. These however failed dismally in the face of a heavy counterattack on the part of the police which was an unexpected as it was devastatingly effective. It transpired that seeing the abandoned car on the roadside Sergeant Farrell, with the aid of two Maoris, Messrs. Tai Hunia and Charlie Whitely. decided to look for tracks across an adjoining turnip patch. These, were eventually found leading along a stream bank where the two'sixteen- yeatr old ; youths were surprised resting in the i rushes. The elder of the two and ob- i vi'ous leader immediately sprang to his feet approaching in a threaten. < ing manner shouting and gesticu- < lating in approved commando fashion. The performance was i cut short when the three closed in < on him and slipped on the hand- ] cuffs. i
