WOMEN'S INSTITUTE ENTER. PRISE VARIED INSTRUCTIVE PROGRAMME A type of entertainment new to this district was introduced recently, when the Eastern Bay of Plenty Federation of Women's Institutes conducted an Eisteddfod at Taneatua in which ten Institutes com--9 peted. This was run in two sections one f being for Public Competitions and the other a Hometime Section. The Public Competitions which consisted of vocal and elocutionary items, piano duets, folk dances etc. were held in the main hall and the results of the Hometime Section were on view in the supper room. This first venture proved most successful the hall being almost filled to capacity and many members expressing the view that in future the Eisteddfod should be an annual fixture.

There were ten classes in the Hometime Section in addition to a "Gift Shop " window dressing contest in which six Institutes competed. The various classes were won by the following Institutes:— 1. Literature Otakiri. 2. Art, Wliakatane. 3. Designing, Taneatua. 4. Arts and Crafts Wliakatane.. o. Plain Wliakatane. G. Fancy Work, Opotiki tied with Wliakatane.

7. Knitting Waimana 8. Floral, Wliakatane 9. Thrift Whakatanc. •)

10. Cookery Otakiri

The maximum marks possible in this section were 525 and Wliakatane .secured first place with 4G8 j Otakiri 2nd, 433 and Edgecumbe 3rd 417. The "Gift Shop" windows were most attractive and marks were awarded according to variety of crafts quality of workmanship, variety of monetary value of goods, originality in ideas and arrangement and general artistic effect. , Edgecumbe was first with 77 of a possible 100 Waimana and Wliakatanc tied for 2nd place with. 75 and Waiotahi 3rd with 74. I Public Competitions: Maximum possible marks in these were 390 and Taneatua were played Ist Avilif 278, Waiotahi 2nd 2GO and Whakatanc 3rd 229. ■? Following' are the various competitions with first placings:— 1. Part Song (a) Whakatanc; (b) Wliakatane. 2. Choral Speaking (a) v Taneatua; (b) Taneatiua. 3. Folk Dance (a) Waiotahi; (b) Waiotahi. 4. Reading aloud at sight Opotiki. 5. Spelling (3 in team) ) Waiotahi. G. General Knowledge (3 in team) Waiotahi. 7. Piano Duet, Otakiri. 8. Vocal Duet Whakatanc. •> 9. Actir.g Test a Waimana . 10. Trio, Opotiki v 11. Elocution Otakiri. 9 12. Unison Song, Wliakatane. 13. Ambulance (bandaging test) 5 Waiotahi. 14. Impromptu Speech Waiotahi. 15. Penmanship Opotiki. IG. Pronunciation Taneatua.
