\ GALA AND SPORTS MEETING %■' 5- ..ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL FIELD DAY | . STRONG DISTRICT SUPPORT - All roads led to Te Tcko on Easter "Monday, when the most successful --J Gymkhana and sports meeting held in the district took p,lace. Residents of the Western Plains set themselves out to give the event all -the support it merited and there A can be no denying the fact that they .succeeded to an amazing degree. From beginning to end the. Gymkhana was one continual procession of interesting" sequences. The side shows did much to entertain the •crowd whilst a number of sporting innovations also helped very materially to keep things moving. The chopping events were once -again the most popular section of competitional events, with the '■' m -veteran axeman W. Costello, proving himself as tough as ever in beat" ing all corners in, the 14 inch, in spite of his heavy handicap. Mr - Costello is a shining example of what can be done by old-timers who . keep in training and refuse to sit back. His appearance at all the on the Plains Avill be wel-,

Laurie (like Johnny Walker— ■ still going strong) nipped the 880 ■ yards, whilst another popular ■ and surprising win was Ray Latim- ■ er's stroll home in the open mile. I The single ladies' race saw a good ■ Uine np } which necessitated the run- ■ ning of two heats. Miss M. Eivers ■ eventually won in an exciting final. ■<* Mr A. Stewart, another veteran of ■ the sports field won the Open Jump J ■ the major attraction in the ring H events. Other events drew good ■ ~ fields and provided the crowd with: ■ some keen competition. H Of the side shows there could be If no doubt of the 'Emperor Ming's' powers of attraction With his en. H tertainers—fair liouris of the Fastis ■ ern harems, he entertained packed K» audiences throughout the day. The ■ cup donated by Mrs Dunderdale was ■ won by the Paroa team. On the field the Whakatane ■ Boys' Band did much to entertain the crowd with bright selections. ' The district ladies are to be comon the manner in. which they H staffed and stocked the refreshment ■ booths } whilst the 'Hangy run by the local Maoris also was a great ■ centre of attraction. We must not ■ overlook Mr Fred Burt, who once H again handling the microphone did j towards ensuring the day's, .success in his own inimitable way. The congratulations of the disH trict go to the executive who toiied H so unremittingly in promoting the .meeting. From Mr Frank Storer ? the hard-working secretary, to every -steward and official on the ground the success of the clay was due in :no small measure.
