SUPPLYING OF LIQUOR

CASES AT TE WHAITI ROTORUA PROSECUTIONS A number of cases dealing with tha supply of liquor to Maoris in the Te Whaiti area were dealt with in the Magistrate's Court at Rotorua last week by Mr S. L. Paterson S.M. William IJillman faced seven counts of supplying to male and female natives on March 9 last and was on one convicted and fined £25 and costs (to be paid at the rate of £1 monthly). On the. other six counts he Avas convicted and discharged. Baslie Haumete, Koni Katcne s Hepetu Te Kaawa and Dobbie Tawhara who commissioned the offence, were fined £5 and costs, each, while Tawhara Te Taite, another member of the party was convicted and discharged . Sub-Inspector M. J. Angland stated that Constable L. Bidois of Te Whaiti, had had reason to believe that home-brew was being made in the district. He arrived at. a camp at 1 a.m. to find Hillman going to his hut s and the worse for liquor. Subsequently the district constable had entered a hut and found natives there, including two young Maori girls. All of the party had later admitted having been supplied with home-brew by Hillman.
