SCHOOL ATHLETICS

ANNUAL SPORTS MEETING

AN INTENSIVE PROGRAMME

For the past two or three weeks athletics lias loomed largely in the minds of the secondary pupils of the Wha'katane District High School in view of tlie annual athletic sports set down for Thursday, March 15. The keen ones could be seen training on tlie Domain in their spare time running and practising the! various jumps. The appointed day turned out hopelessly wet, so the meeting had to he postponed until Monday March 10 which could not '9 . , have been better for the occasion. So numerous were the entries that even then all the events could not be finished on the one day, and various jumps and relays had to be finalised on succeeding days. The fact that there are no really- outstanding athletes at the school this year made competition all the keen-* er, and in most events close linishes were the order. This was particularly the case with the inter-house competition. Each pupil is attached to one. of the lour houses, which scored points, according to the places Avon in the various events by their members. The Teras established a lead on sports day, but were gradually overhauled bv the Orakaus so that } before the last event was decided on Friday these two houses were exactly equal in points. The result of the junior high jump put the Orakaus into the winning position. The following are the results:— Boys' Events 100 yds Junior Championship: R. Has: am 1; C. Hawthorne 2; J. Cam. eron .'3.
