AUSTRALIAN CARS

INDUSTRY TO BE ESTABLISHED

The Prime Minister of Mr Curt in, has recently announced his Government's decision with regard to the establishment of a car industry in Australia. All parties interested in the manufacture of cars in the Commonwealth arc to be. asked to submit proposals. If none of these proves .satisfactory the Government will establish a corporation to manufacture complete cars, in which it will have a substantial iinancial interon the same lines as Amalgamated Wireless of Australia Ltd. in which the Government holds 51 per cent of the shares. The cabinet has adopted the recommendations of its sub-committee ? which recommended the revival of the Motor-vehicle Agreement Act and the Motor-vehicle Engine Bounty Act. The former Aet } passed in 1940 authorised an agreement between the Government and a company that was to have been formed by the Australian Consolidated Industries Ltd. to manufacture cars. The Bounty Act provided for the payment of bounties on engines manufactured in Ausratlia. The car the Government wants produced is a "utility model in power, price and range." It is hoped that it may be possible to build this to sell in Australia for £350.
