¥2 WAIMANA'S RECORD DAY yA ■ 'lijl. ■. , • : r 'm REMARK AB LE GYMKHANA RESULTS Waimana will have every rea- * -son. to be proud of the net re- _ turn of the very successful Gymkhana and Sports day promoted V. in that centre last Saturday in the interests of the local Patriotic funds. From every point of * view the day was an outstanding one which out did: even the r* most optimistic hopes. Thy gate alone realised £125 which was a 25 per cent increase on last year's, whilst the Maori Hangi and Clothes stall achieved a fur- ~ ther £100. The committee behind this mod'el meeting is* to be warmly congratulated'. In the competitional events entries exceeded last year's in practically every department and a singular fact, was that those taking part came from as far away as Rotorua, Putaruru ( Matawai and .Te . Karaka an indication of the growing popularity of Waimana as a •sports centre. The ring events provided keen competition and several -spectacular features which won the crowd. The chopping was a hot favourite with the public who showed the keenest interest in "all the •events and who also gave lusty encouragement to the competitors. 'Chopping is well on the upgrade in this district { and Waimana's display • attained a new standard which "would be hard to improve upon.
• In the athletics j the main feature % of the clay was Grant Mitchell's. win an the 120 yards hurdles. The win met "with popular acclaim and the X local lad received an ovation as he breasted the tape. The Hat events ■drew particularly good fields and provided close finishes. There can be no doubt but that the concentrated interest on this sport has had the desired result of popularising 0 it and of bringing a new height in .standard and tone. Bright music throughout the day ivas supplied by the AVhakatanc p Pipe Band. The residents of Waimana once -again came to the fore in running -their Gymkhana just as it should be run and. we have to warmly compliment the Mr R. Warfcllaw, and his hard-working secretary ? Mrs Wyk]e ? on the deserved succcss -of their efforts. The district ladies once again staffed the numerous m .stalls and booths and left nothing to be desired in that respect, -while the local Maoris excelled themselves by producing the delicacies from the hangi which found widespread demand.
