WOMEN'S DIVISION
QUARTERLY MEETING HELD
PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVE
The quarterly meeting of the Bay of Plenty Provincial Executive of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held in the County Chambers on February 14, 1945. There were present Mesdames. Grey in the chair, Haultain, Wilson, Barr, Jamieson Collins Downes and Hay. ward. Apologies were received from Mesdames Smith Hopkirk and Prince. Correspondence: Answers Avere received from our M.P., and from the Dominion Secretary, W.D.F.U. re the proposed Hostel for Domestic Aids at Edgecumbe. Mrs Haultain proposed that the secretary write to the Minister of Rehabilitation along the same lines as the letters to the M.P, and to the Dominion Secretary pointing out the help it would be to rehabilitating soldiers on that estate ) without the land being overloaded with the cost of that large building; also that w r e recommend that girls for country work should be trained in the counti*3 r . Assistance, was also offered to the Minister in' setting up and carrying out any scheme along these lines that may be set up. Seconded by Mrs Jamieson and carried. Many people find the. closing of the shops and Post Office in Wha'katane during lunch hour a great in, convenience, ft is realised that business men have difficulty in obtaining sufficient staff at this time of labour shortage, but country folk are busy people and short-handed also. To combine a visit to the hospital to see relatives and with some shopping, is difficulty when one realises the shops shut from 12.30 to 1.30, and the. hospital visiting hours begin at 2 p.m. The secretary was instructed to write to the Chamber of Commerce and to the asking if it would be possible to have the shops and Post Oit'ice opened the whole day. An invitation was received to the opening of "Te Kiteroa" Waimate, the second of the two newly acquired Rest Homes in the South Island. The. secretary was asked to write_ conveying the Union's thanks and good wishes. Mrs Flavei's resignation as a Division Housekeeper was received with regret. The secretary was asked to send a letter of thanks and appreciation. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chair.
The old slogan, "Encourage Local Industry," is not seen in print or heard from the platform so frequently as it used to be, simply because local industry is encouraged and that to a most gratifying extent in New Zealand to-day. Workshops and factories are springing up in the various centres of population where goods in everyday demand are turned out equal to anything imported, and in some instances actually better! Tobacco is a case in point. Grown and manufacI tured within the Dominion, this indispensable commodity for quality is j second to none. The raw material is produced under ideal condititons. Climate soil, highly skilled labour and the most modern methods of manufacture combine to make the six brands, Cut Plug No. 10} (Bullshead), Cavendish, Navy Cut, No. 3 (Rulldog), Riverhead Gold, Desert Gold and Pocket Edition, the perfect tobacco. One of its extraordinary merits is that it is toasted. That, remarkable process (the manufacturers' own) eliminates the nicotine in the leaf and renders the finished product practically harmless something that cannot be said of even the finest imported.
