A.T.C. FUNCTION
ANNUAL DANCE HELD
OVER 250 COUPLES ATTEND
Nearly six hundred people packed the Winter Show Buildings on Friday evening on the occasion of the annual dance held by Squadron 35 of the Air Training Corps. The dance was also by way of a farewell from members* of the Squadron to Warrant Officer Graham Mead who has volunteered and been accepted by the Air Force. Dancing commenced at 8.15, and except for one short interval when the Squadron was paraded shortly after supper continued without a break "till 2 a.m. Music was supplied by Alf Brown's Yacht Club Orchestra from Rotorua while W.O. Graham Mead Was Master of Ceremonies. Decorations consisted of flags and red, white and blue drapings, while a novel touch was added by the letters A.T.C. which were formed in coloured streamers, on a black setting which formed a backdrop to the orchestral dais. The floor was excellent, having been worked up to such a pitch that despite the large crowd the usual dust nuisance was entirely absent. Supper was in the capable hands of the basketball girls who handled the numerous sittings in record fashion. Much of the. supper was homemade and was thoroughly enjoyed. Novelty dances were once more well to the fore these taking the j form of three. Monte Carlos and a Spot Waltz. The first two Monte Carlos were won by Miss Thorby and Mr Rawson a and Miss E. McKay and Mr J. Corbett, while the prize for the Spot Waltz went to Miss M. Herdi*an and Mr J. Sax. The third Monte Carlo was the big dance of the evening. Entrance fee was sixpence ana the prize took the form of £1 apiece. 250 couples competed and Miss. E. McKay and Mr L. Baldock were the successful pair. An enjoyable extra was played by Miss N. West, and Messrs L. Broadmore and Eagleson. Shortly after supper, all members of the Air Training Corps present paraded before the dais, whei'e F/O Whitworth, on behalf of the Squad* ron extended thanks to the basket, ball girls, the ladies, who helped with the supper, the Band, and the people for lending their support in the fashion they aid. He then called on W.O. Graham Mead to accept a token with the best wishes of every member of Squadron 35. Warrant Officer Mead replied suitably after which the C.O. handed the squadron over to him to dismiss for the last. time. Towards the end of the evening, a very welcome addition to the dance appeared in the form of four members of the Kiwi Concert paity who supplied two vocal items lollowed by a very enjoyable extra foxtrot which included four popular numbers rendered on the piano and saxaphone. The Goodnight Waltz was the last on the programme, and brought to a close a dance that, was in everyone's opinion a 'Jolly Good Show.
