MEAT EXPORT

RETARDED KILLINGS THIS

SEASON

A TEMPORARY PHASE, The periodic returns of export killings prepared by the. N.Z. Meat Producers Board show that producers are able to take full advantage of the financial arrangement to increase carcase weights. Reports from the Board's supervising graders are that feed is ample and winter prospects good in nearly every part of the Dominion. Decreases in killings compared with last season probably " can therefore be regarded as a temporary phase. Export meat killing's at New Zealand works to February 24, with corresponding details for last season in parentheses have been as follows: — North Island Lambs :y).>2 } 271 (3,179-1,-170) Wethers '249 895 ( 174.233) Ewes ( 666,826) South Island Lambs J,732, 399 (1 } 934 290) Wethers 11 , 156 ( . 9, 826 ) Ewes ( 7 5,9 30) Weather conditions in Auckland district have, been excellent for the time of the year, warm temperatures having further stimulated growth of pastures. Though broken weather had been experienced on the West Coast and in Taranaki, the feed position was reported to be good in North and Central Taranaki and very good in South Taranaki and Wanganui districts. "There is too much feed at present through this reports the. supervising grader in Hawke's Bay. The opinion is expressed that farmers will go into the winter with good pastures and that cattle must be kept back from the works to cope with the heavy amount of feed. Good pastures'and ample, feed are also reported from the Manawatu and Wairarapa districts. Weather conditions in Canterbury for the week ended 10th March were satisfactory. There was heavy rain on two nights but otherwise conditions for pastures were good t with warm bright days., "Favourable weather conditions have been experienced during the past week," states, the Otago and Southland 'report, "Feed conditions in Southland are with the prospect of plenty of winter feed, but at present the feed" conditions in most of the Otago district are by no means good."
