The first meeting ol' the Maize Marketing Committee to be held in the Bay ol' Plenty district took place in Tauranga recently under the chairmanship of Mr Ross P. Fraser acting-Director of Internal Marketing, This committee was constituted under the. Maize Marketing Regulations in September last;' in order to control the sale and distribution of maize so that as far as possible the small crop available this season should be evenly and fairly distributed to ail classes of consumers throughout New Zeaand. The mem., bership is a representative one consisting of representatives of producers from both the Bay of Plenty and Poverty Bay areas representatives appointed by merchants in the growing areas, merchant distributors in consuming' districts, and manufacturers, with a representative of the N.Z. .Poultry Board and one from eacli of the two Government departments closeh r concerned with jinaize production and Department of Agriculture and the Internal Marketing Division. The committee had a difficult job in endeavouring to arrange the deliveries of maize equitably to all consumers with the combination o( a very short crop and an abnormal demand and it has of course been . s > impossible to satisfy" all parties. It was reported that a certain amount of "black marketing" of ! maize contrary to the regulations, 'was taking place in both the Bay of Plenty and Poverty Bay areas and the committee decided to investigate any cases reported to them and to take such action as may be required to stop any The committee emphasise that under Clause 13 of the regulations no sales or deliveries of maize may be made by growers or other persons without authority and parties to any such sales or deliveries are liable to a ■ fine of £100.
