FUTURE OF EDGECUMBE

THE official gesture to curb any future effort to allow the rising township of Edgecumbe to expand in a normally healthy manner by refusing Government sanction to further sub-divisional plans, is as futile as it is ill-timed and shortsighted. If Edgecumbe, occupying as it does, a key position in the central Rangitaiki, is destined to grow, all the enactments in the world will not prevent it. Houses will rise on privately-owned properties if the demand for their erection is great enough. Likewise there is nothing to pr& < vent places of business being erected in the same manner. The only prospect for the new regulation will be the hap hasard manner in which the township will take shape, owing to the total absence of systemised subdivision. With this conviction in mind it would probably have been a far wiser course on the part of the departmental officers concerned, to permit the normal subdivision of the land in the township, but in doing so, to have issued a warning (if this were thought necessary) to all future builders and householders regarding any prospective danger they may have in mind.
