A. & P. GYMKHANA

WHAKATANE'S INITIAL VENTURE

HIGH STANDARD SHOWN

POOR SUPPORT RENDERED

The Whakatane and Rangitaiki A. -and P. Gymkhana which was held in the Whakatane. Showgrounds on Saturday could not be described as an unqualified success from the financial point of view but from the aspect of horsemanship could be rated as equal to any held in" previous years. District support lor the venture was not up to expectations and, the entries were, on the whole, poor but first class displays of jumping and riding in the better contested events supplied plenty of thrills and entertainment for those, who did attend.

The sports themselves were well -conducted and handled in, an efficient manner. All entries were received well to time and the events were run off without delay. Messrs W. for the heavy horses L. G. Woodward for the light horses • and jumping and H. Haeusler for the ponies constituted the judges, and ;ail were unanimous' in that the standard was well up tb it,he mark .shown in previous meetings.

Kiddies obstacle races provided amusemont for spectators and contestants alike while 'ye ancient sporte' of tossing the sheaf was well patronised. In the weight guessing competitions, the weight of the turkey (one of the Rangitaiki variety) ranged from ounces to 2491b5.

Throughout the afternoon the Boys Band supplied the right atmosphere for the occasion by a lively selection of tunes to the evident appreciation of the public. The Whaka tane Pipe Band was also in attendance and headed the. Grand Parade ■which displayed a gooil exhibition •-of light and heavy horses. The public was kept informed of events by Mr Bob Oxenham who handled the microphone in expert fashion.
