Eiflit Hours to Australia "It took us just eight hours to cross the- Tasnian," said Mr Harry Smith an Australian businessman i who is interested in the Whakatane Paper Mills in an interview with a Beacon representative yesterday. "When I consider that in 1917 it took me nearly five days to make the same trip I think you will appreciate the marvellous® revolution which .is taking place with the development of air travel. There is no doubt but that Australian and New Zealand interests will be drawn closer and closer together in the future as a result of the air links which are building up." Barracks Week The cadet corps of the Whakatane High School has for the past week been in barracks.. By this the cadets 9 do not actually camp but the normal school hours are taken up with cadet work under an army instructor. All phases of the work are gone through from drill and discipline to small arms training and firing practice and the essentials of all army training are packed into one solid week. Although barracks week is welcomed by the boys as a temporary relief from school Avork it is usually found that by the end (today), they are more than ready to return to the normal round of Math& French and homework. 9 Praise for Ohope "I would like to compliment you in the very excellent beach you have at Ohope," said Mr Harry Smith, a prominent Sydney business executive who visited Whakatane over the week-end. "I have travelled in many parts- of the world and I will say that as a beach it compares favourably with many others which are world famous. The complete absence of sharks, is one. of the features which we Australians can fully appreciate. You have no idea how good it was to be able to plunge into the water without any safegaurding nets and to feel absolutely at ease regarding sharks," He went on 'to give praise to the town of Whakatane itself which he. described as neat and clean and well laid out.. The two hotels would compare favourably with any others in the larger centres of Australia or New Zealand.
