ROAD ACCESS TO WHAKATANE

THE Harbour Board is to be warmly congratulated on taking the initiative in calling a Borough conference for the purpose of. reaching unanimity on the course of the proposed East Coast Highway. The route now favoured by the overwhelming majority <>f citizens in this town is that which brings the Tauranga highway into the town across the mudflats, and rises to connect with the Hillcrest road by means of a broad circular sweep round the rear of the 'Pa. Such a road would develop and improve beyond recognition, Whakatane's waterfront, give new and easy access to Hillcrest, demand the construction of a new and modern bridge across the river in the vicinity of the Paper Mills, and thus bring within the realms of possibility the initiation of a housing scheme for Mill workers within walking distance of their job.
