A SOLDIER'S MOTHER
To a soldier in a distant land j With terrors, only he can understand^ When tired and footsore on his guard does stand; His mother is a picture and a light, divine, And oft lor her his lonely heart does pine. Not all lor him is toil and adverse being; New peoples and their customs liQ is jseeing, But wliile each busy hour and day is. fleeing His inward eye turns back and fondly sees His mother praying for him on bended knees. He knows full well she's thinking of her son And counting every hour till war is done 9 And peace does silence every angry gun. Then through God's will to her ■shall be returned The one her loving heart so long has yearned. But now while yet the battle wages sti'ong, He lights to uphold right and crush the Avrong; So when the heavens cry out loud and long "The strife is o'ei\ go lly your banners bold, Haste home to her whose woi>'i is more than gold—your mother." —Richard Willock, i;i ( JBl2, Middle Last.
