CANDIDATE'S VIEWS

MAORIS AND LIQUOR QUESTION

Speaking at Kawhiajin the course of his campaign for the Western. Maori by-election Mr M. W. Piahana Independent Maori Party candidate, referred to the question of liquor among the Maori people. He said that a remit was submitted to the last Labour Conference asking that Maoris be granted the. same right as Europeans to consume liquor off licensed premises-. Mr Piahana contended that the effect of the free How of liquor into Maori homes would be disastrous. He said that the principle, of equality which prompted the remit would be far more truly fulfilled if the same restrictions at present placed on Maoris were extended also to apply to' Europeans. Mr Piahana added that the pact between the early Government and the Maori chiefs which prohibited liquor from the King Country was sacred. There was- a need for vi golance as there were, subtle influences at work trying to undermine this pact.
