ARGUMENT FOR AERODROME
THE fact that during, the Railway strike it was possible to recommission the little used aerodrome at Opotiki for the purpose of flying direct from Auckland, urgen mails and important commodities, illustrates only too well just how far behind the times the residents of Whakatane have been with regard to airmihdedness in the past. In the event of further national emergencies arising, and there is every probability, this town and district will again suffer for its lack of foresight. This fact has to be borne in mind together with the empty prospect of the future which will sponsor aviation in all its phases, in every corner of the Dominion where an aerodrome or landing ground exists. Why in the midst of 80,000 acres of flat country we cannot agree to set aside a hundred acres of it for the purpose of fostering a,viation and giving this district a chance to be included in the future progress of the Dominion, is not merely unfortunate—it is a slur upon our sense of proportion and enterprise.
