TANEATUA-MOTUHORA

GISBORNE CHAMBER'S

SUPPORT

"I can be brief because we are in the liappy position of having results that speak for themselves," said the retiring president Mr W. E. McEl\vaine j at the annual meeting last. Wednesday of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce. He added : "Members will I thinly agree that the chamber has had a busy year and that its work for the good of Gisborne has hot jjeen without re-j suits,."

After referring to the greatly improved financial position and the increase in membership to a record Mr McEhvaine said that perhaps, the most important work of the year was the-effort to bring about the completion of the Tane. atua-Matawai link in the Auckland-1 Gisborne railway. I

"We are still actively at work on this he added "and we are continuing to receive valued help from other organisations and individuals. In the light of information which, has been received I have every hope, that this railway, connection will be started in the not very distant future."

PUBLIC MEETINGS LIKELY MEMBER'S INTEREST The member for the Bay of Plenty Mr W. is to meet members of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce this month in connection with steps- to be taken to urge the completion of the Taneatua-Matawai link in the Auckland-Gisborne railway. A letter received from the executive of the Auckland Chamber -of Commerce at last week's meeting of the Gisborne chamber supported a suggestion for the holding of a public meeting at Whakatane to pass resolutions urging the completion of the link and that an early survey of the line be made. Mr L. T. Burnard considered that opinion in the various centres affected could best be expressed if meetings- were held simultaneously at Whakatane i} Opotiki and Gisborne and were connected by telephone.
