Appointment Authorised In accordance with the Nurses and Midwives Registration Board's recommendation the Whakatane Hospital Board decided at its last meeting to appoint a new sister lor duties in the local Annexe. 45 000 Sheep Reports state that on the road between Whakatane and Ruatoria on Thursday last, 45,000 sheep were on the move. These were strung over twenty mobs and with a delay of ten minutes at each mob motorists lost upwards of three hours on the run from here to Ruatoria. Probably the number of sheep on the move will exceed 50 j OOO this week. Methodist Garden Party Readers are reminded of the garden party in aid of Methodist Church funds to be held at. the residence of Misses F. and A. Ramson on Thursday afternoon, 'February 8. In the event of wet weather, which is highly improbable according to the local weather prophets the proceedings will be carried out in the Methodist Hall. Overseas Telegrams The following has been received from the Director-General, Post and Telegraph Department, Wellington on, 30th instant: "Arrangements were recently made by the Naval authorities to expedite the delivery of overseas telegrams to Naval personnel serving in seagoing ships by using wherever possible naval wireless channels to dispose of the messages. Naval authorities strongly recommend senders to use the 2/6tl EFM service." A. & P» Gymkhana The attention of readers is drawn to the list of events appearing on page eight, of this issue to be run in connection with the A. and P. Society Horse Show and Gymkhana which will, take place on February 17 at the Showgrounds, Whakatane. Classes to include heavy and light horses in the ring events together with childrens' races and novelties will be the order of the day and the public is assured of first-class entertainment throughout. Maraetotara Gorge Corner At the last meeting of. the County Council Works Committee, a letter was received from the Whakatane Borough Council asking when, the work of cutting back the corner at the top of the Maraetotara Gorge, would be put in hand as stated in an earlier letter to the Borough Council! It was- resolved that the Borough Council be advised that plans in connection with this work will be submitted to the Main Highways Board as soon as possible and that the delay in the work is*regrettable but has been unavoidable. Income Tax Payable The Commissioner of Taxes draws the attention of taxpayers to the notification appealing in today's is.sue that the due date of payment, of Income-tax is on Wednesday, the 14th day of February, 1945. Additional tax will accrue if the tax is not paid on or before 7th March 1945. The demands will be posted from the office of the Commissioner of Taxes on or about 7th February, 1945. Demands must be presented with ail payments, and if a demand has not been received the Commissioner should be communicated AVith. New Water Scheme \ In his report to the Whakatarfe County Council, at its last, meetings Mr C.. H. Brebner, County Engineer, stated that a new water scheme was installed at Ohope for the Domain Board. It involved the construction of a concrete dam, the building of. a pump and the installation of electric power, and a pump etc. The original reservoir is being used for storage. The scheme was completed the day before Christmas, and apart from minor trouble the first few days owing to tight, bearings it has proved a complete success*. There will be a surplus of w r ater apart from that required for the picnic ground. Who Laughs Last*— ! Those farmers who postponed their harvesting operations till the weather • picked up have certainly the laugh on those who endeavoured to complete it according to the calendar. Many indeed have not long commenced the work, and although they ran the risk of the weather staying bad and losing their whole crop they were fortunate in that the present spell of fine weather came when it did. Other farmers who chose to harvest at an earlier date around Christmas were more sure of getting a certain percentage of their hay but the poorness of the weather was> made apparent in the quality of the crop.
