QUEEN CARNIVAL

INTRODUCING THE CANDIDATES

KEEN COM PET IT lON EXACTED

The attention' of readers is drawn to an advertiseme'nt appearing on the front page of this issue dealing with the announcement! of a dance to be hejldl ijn, the Winter Show Buildings thiis evening as an opening to the k forthcoming Queen Carnival. In all there are three queen candidates. They are Miss Nancy Ferguson, nominated by the Edgecumbe Sports Committee, Miss Patricia Jac'kson, nominated by the Thornton Farmers: Committee and Miss Hazel Cave as the Returned Service- ! mens Queen. The coming carnival represents the first genuine one to be held since 1939. Certainly Popular Girl contests have proved most popular but the crowning of the winning queen which is inevitably lacking in these at the conclusion of the drive always adds a finishing touch to the series of events. The fact, that each Queen has already a large following in the particular section she represents should add to the competitive spirit but it will, in the main } be the large section of the 'unbiased' public which will decide the issue. As a grand finale to the effort, a Victory Gymkhana will be held at Thornton on February 10 and a wind-up dance will follow when the winning queen will be crowned. , All arrangements' for the carnival are well forward, and keen competition among the supporters of the various candidates is expected. The opening dance to-niglit will be followed by others in different places throughout the districts included in the area and the public is looked to to support its own particular choice to the utmost. Competitions will also play a big part in the scheme of things, and given the backing of a public which so far has always proved to be in sympathy with any such movement the carnival should be one of the biggest and best yet held in the district.
