Windfall for Fire Brigade Notification has been received by the Borough Council from the Internal Affairs Department that three single-head stand pipes, part of the E.P.S. equipment and valued at £51 in ay be handed to the local lire brigade free of charge. Borough Rate Collection "I thin'k the ratepayers ought to be congratulated on the fact that 98.8 per cent, of the rates, were collected this year. It speaks well for the general tone of the town. Of the total rate of £10-160 £10 336 was •5 ' •> ■collected leaving a bare outstanding amount of £124. Proposed NcNv Rest room At the last meeting of the Borough Council Works Committee the question of the provision of an additional, ladies convenience at the Maori shelter at the Rock was, discussed. It was resolved that the consideration be deferred until the next meeting of the committee. Seasonal Greetings Reciprocated "May your deliberations during the coming year be as profound as of yore." Such was the message of seasonal greetings cabled to the Whakatane Borough Council by Colonel F. Prideaux and read at the January meeting last Monday. The Council decided to reply in kind by extending its best wishes to the sender. Body Recovered The body of the sixteen year old Samuel Alexander Robb ? of "Thornton > who was drowned! in the heavy surf on Thornton Beach last Sunday was recovered on the coastal strip above Thornton yesterday afternoon. The inquest takes place at Whakatane at 10 a.m. this morning. Town Water Supply Referring to investigations in the matter of extensions etc. to the Borough water supply the Foreman-En-gineer reported to the Works Com-, mittee that tests at the dam site at the Wainui Te Whara Stream were nearly completed. Mr Bunyard (late Rotorua Borough Engineer) would assist in the investigations and would be attending at Whakatane in the near future. Proposal Rejected Discussing the request from the Chamber of Commerce at the last, meeting of the Borough Council Works Committee that the street corners' at the intersection of Commerce Street and Domain Road be set baclt 5 the chairman, Cr S. S. Shapley, reported that some years ago the corners had been set that on the south by 21ft. and that on the north by 9ft. It was resolved that the Council be recommended to take no further action. Sale of Motor Trucks A large offering of 197 assorted trucks will be available for purchase at Auckland on January 24., under the jurisdiction of the War Assets Realisation Board. The trucks are former Army vehicles and may be inspected at the Auckland depot on Januay 22 and 23 ? while applications Avill close with the Transport Licensing Authority on the ground at 12 noon on January 23. The sale will start at 9 a.m. Many of the vehicles are 31 I and 42 models and include large and small types Avith some tow wagons. Warrants of Fitness In the last issue of the Beacon an article was printed concerning the regulations governing -the issue of Warrants of Fitness for motor vehicles. In the last, paragraph which concerns trailers a slight mistake occurred. This should have read: "Trailers are more in evidence this year and it would be wise to note that all trailers or caravans must carry a number plate for daylight travel. Should a W.O.F. for daylight, use only be the prior consent of the Commissioner of Transport must be obtained."
