WARRANTS OF FITNESS

POINTS MADE CLEAR

Tek view ©f a variety of orders that have been issued governing traffic regulations, over the past few months it will doubtless be interesting toclarify one or two of these. . One point concerns damaged number plates. These have now beet} iru use since the year having perhaps from the inroads of rust mud. or general disrepair and in some cases, may be in bad shape for quick reading. If both plates, are taken to the post office new plates will be issued for a very small charge. In the case of one : plate, being lost a.< new application has to be lodged but in this case the charge is 1/6 more than: is the case of having old damaged plates renewed. There is:. an easily understandable reason for this as a great amount of departmental: bookkeeping is involved iru checking up one plateInterpretation of ,the warrant of fitness regulation, lias in the past been somewhat hazy but the present position is clear cut. Cars issued with and bearing CAR stickers on. the windscreen take out a warrant of fitness which carries them for twelve months from the date of issue. The twelve months' warrant, applies also to motor cycles, trail-* ers or caravans. All types of trucks and all cars bearing a BC sticker take out a warrant of fitness which lasts for six months from date of issue. At one time some effort was made to give consideration to mileage travelled and whilst at face value this may have been a fair way to go about it 5 in actual practice it. was impossible for a number of reas, ons > not the least of which was the fact that in a great number of cars the speedometer was either riot, working or was not reliable. Trailers are more in evidence this year and it would be wise to note that all trailers or caravans must carry a number plate which suffices for daylight travel only, Should night travel be. desired the prior consent of the Commissioner of. Transport must be obtained. Any garage will attend to this detail but please note the words "prior consent."
