UNITED KINGDOM MANU-
FACTURERS
OPPORTUNITY FOR PRIVATE
ENTERPRISE
Six hundred prototype licences have already been granted to United Kingdom manufacturers for the production of new civilian goods. This was revealed by Mr H. President of the. Board of Trade < when he announced the British Government's plan for a swift switch-over of the nation's industries to a peacetime basis as soon as the war situation permits. One thousand Government war factories will be made available for private enterprise and in allocating them the Board of Trade will be. able to influence the location of industry. In this way the Government will direct subsidiary industries to areas which hitherto relied almost exclusively on a single industry and will thus create balanced economy. In a South Wales, coal area, for example forty firms are already preparing for the manufacture of such products as gas stoves ) refrigerators and carpets.
Thirteen regional authorities, with representatives ol' employees' Trade Unions and the Board of Trade will ensure that the. switchovers are made with the maximum swiftness
and smoothness
