CENTRAL DEFEAT UNITED
The second series of the Ist round, in the Clark Shield competition was played during the week-end and oni the Domain Central were successful against United by 72 runs on the first innings. United's defeat may be attributed to very weak batting against accurate but not dangerous* bowling. Central took first strike and started very slowly 4 it was not until the advent of Malaquin and Phillips that the scoring rate increased. Campbell played right through the innings for 33 his was a stubborn effort. Laurie was un-» lucky to be run out on reaching double figures. McKenzie bowled li£ overs and took 4 wic'kets> for 6 runs. United started poorly Cameron playing one on and Parkes was run outSpring was settling down when giv-* en out lbw. McKenzie went witli' the score at 41 and the innings closed at this total the last, five batsmenfailing to score. All the bowlers, performed Phillips returning the best average.
