DAIRYING MATTERS
FARMERS' UNION STATEMENT
DAIRY BOARD'S PROPOSALS
Auckland Farmers' Union Execu-
tive at its meeting went into the question of the new set-up suggested for dairying at the Dairy Board meeting held on November 10, in the
light of the proposals made at that meeting for a link-up ol the body that was intended to represent farmers themselves with the representatives of the commercial and manufacturing side of dairying.
Some members of the Auckland executive expressed alarm as to the possible effects of the scheme on any control that might otherwise be exercised by the rank and file. Though it was realised that the proposals have still to be considered and not being as yet part of the Auckland executive of the Farmers' Union considered it a duty to draw the attention of all farmers to dangers that appeared to exist in the proposals ? under which if made effective, the ordinary farmer might be so remote from
;hose who spoke and made decisions 'or him as to have no effective voice n matters that, concerned him most
nearly
If it is intended, as appears to be the case, that representation of dairy farmers shall be through dairy company directors, a most undemocratic system of representation and of voting for representatives will be substituted for common membership.
It was felt that other farming sections are affected by the proposals because these will inevitably be applied through the Meat and Wool Boards if they are adopted in the more democratic dairying industry. This would sound the death-knell of control of their own affairs by the rank and file.
