Whakatane Paper Mills
"With the. expected adjustment of. selling prices to take care of increased costs of raw materials an improved trading position should restate the directors of Whaka-» tane Paper Mills Ltd. in their annual report. The outstanding feature of the balance sheet is the sharp drop in the net profiti from. £40 ? 747 in 1D43 to £2592 for 1944. The latter figure is arrived, at after allowing £47,396 for depreciation (£45000 the previous year) and' £42,588 for taxation (£25,000).' Sales were up by nearly £8000 at £531,0b0 f but. the gross profit was down, by al- , most £20, 000 at £133,000. The stores and raw materials position is considerably better than in 1943. Fixed assets are shown as £1,665,000, this: figure including for 62 000 acres of pulp wood plantations and 6992 acres of tawa forest, pulp and paper mills and plant are shown as. £427,000. .The quest-ion of back dividends is mentioned, the direc- . tors on this point remarking that the burden of taxation makes it. difficult to suggest "any substantial contribution towards a settlement of past dividends."
