SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIP Before the holidays a tennis championship amongst the secondary boys at Lhe. Whakatane District High School has been in progress. Although it was not played regularly as a school game, a number of boys play at various courts in the district so the championship was instituted to determine their relative ability. On account of the short time and the limited number of courts available, the competition had to be restricted to 10 players. The following are. the results:—■ First Round: K. Sullivan beat A. Mundy 6/3; W. Rutherford beat T. Wilkins 6/1: P. Gow beat R. Hainerton 6/3; K. Hylaud beat B. Thoinassen 6/2; M. Davis beat T'. Law 6/1; M. Tiepa beat K. Carter 6/0; T. Takao beat J. Te Maipi 6/4; B. Bell beat D. Carling 6/0. Second Round: Rutherford beat Sullivan 6/5; Hyland beat Gow 6/5; Tiepa beat Davis 6/3; Bell beat Takao 6/5. Semi-linal: Rutherford beat Hyland 6/2; Tiepa beat Bell 7/5. Final: Rutherford beat Tiepa 6/0 ? 6/3. The final was an interesting game in which the winner's sounder stroke production and superior courtcraft proved decisive.
