SCHOOL BREAK-UP

INTERESTING PARENTS DAY

WORK DISPLAY AND FLOWER SHOW

Last Thursday assumed great importance from thc J juvenile point of view as it happened to be the breaking up and l par- • ents day for the Whakatane High School and Secondary Department. The premises were thrown open to parents who en- . joyed the chance of making a tour of inspection through' the various classrooms. An innovation this year was the children's flower show, a splendid display of blooms: in the science room which was much admired. Visitors on the main were limited ■to the. fair sex though occasionally mere man was to be seen rooming round inspecting and generally endeavouring to look at home. On the whole the day could be described as an enjoyable and interesting one from the adults' point of view. Each classroom vied with the other in making a display of handwork exhibition 'work and novelties. Blackboards were abundantly covered with drawings portraying the approaching event of Christmas. Some of the drawings were really excellent and created the requisite atmosphere for the festive season. A section which surprised and delighted the onlookers was: without a doubt the handwork display. The craftsmanship exhibited was of the highest standard and the goods .shown could to our minds, have been offered for sale anywhere. There is certainly some very useful instruction being given at the ..High School woodwork classes. In most rooms Father Christmas was depicted endeavouring to push his enormous bulk down a very thin brick chimney whilst Christmas trees were prominent in the coriv ers.. Stalls carried on a brislv business though it was obvious that they ■-suffered through lack of the necessary stock. Afternoon tea was served by the senior girls, in the late afternoon. whilst a drill display again by the girls much appreciated. The school is to be congratulated on its enterprise, and Ave sincerely hope that the financial side Avill be wholly up to expectations. All the children combined in this respect •even down to the young army of juniors Avho besieged all visitors as. .soon as they arrived with buttonlioles for sale.
