CALEDONIAN DAY AT OHOPE
NEW YEAR'S DAY EVENT
The largest sports meteting ever to be held at Ohope will take place on New Year's Day when the Whakatane Caledonian Society will run the first gala athletic and dancing programme in its history. Details are proceeding upon a scale never before attempted in this district and already some of the features which have been .finalised bid! fair to surprise all who attend. There' will be a Pipe Band of approximatel 50 players; there will be over £55 awarded in prize money alone; there will be numerous trophies; a sptfctacular marching competition for youth movements; a Bathing Beauty Contest dedicated to the sylphs of Ohope Beach; a cross-country race and Piping and Dancing competitions. Numerous novelty events all go to swell a crowded' programme which should make the sports second to none. The Sow ciety has gone out of its< way to provide the best amenities postsi blfc' for the visiting public and the area is in itself admirably suited 1 for such a gathering. Surrounded by native bush y and bounded by three sidles by a natural the sports ground lt'aves nothing to be desired. The weather being kind there is nothing to prevent this new venture by this progressive organisation from being the outstanding success it deserves to be.
