WHAKATANE PAH
QUESTION OF IMPROVEMENTS
NATIVE MINISTER'S LETTER
Writing with reference to the | dilapidated state of the Whare- ! o-Toroa pah which occupies the position immediately east of the Strand 1 , the Minister of Native A^fFaijrs (Hon H. G. R. Ma'sojn) informed the Borough Council that it was high time something was d>one to improve the layout and replace some of the buildings. The letter went on to say that Judge Harvey had approached the department regarding the state of the pah. The fundamental trouble was due in the first place to the native titles and the badly shaped sections some of which were only 15 and 17 perches in extent. The settlement was also served by roads as narrow as 1(3 and 19 feet. Before the native owners could give security for the erection of new dwellings it would be necessary to recast the subdivisions and provide for roads at least 50ft. wide and sections Avit.li a minimum of 20 perches. There was a public road between the block and the foot of the clift«.--which had never been used and it Avas suggested that this might possibly be used to Aviden the existing road lines.
The Mayor ? to whom the letter had been referred said that he had conferred with Judge Harvey on the o'oteasion of his last visit to VVha--katane. He understood that the Judge had the matter well in hand and that the Council could take no useful action meanwhile.
