American Tobacco Pipes
Because tobacco pipes cannot be obtained from Britain, the, Customs' Department lias given permission for New Zealand importers to use the licences granted lor imports in 19 1,1 lor obtaining pipes from Canada and the United States. Transfers. of licences will be granted on condition that imports are confined to pipes in the less expensive grades. For the. last three years very few pipes have been from Britain because supplies of French briar were cut oft' when France was overrun by the Germans,
Roof Gardens in London
A newspaper clipping recently re-i eeived by a. SouLh Island resident describes the garden grown on the roof of New Zealand House < London. A tiny patch of wheat provided variety for the four liens which were, kept on the roof at. one time ( and a fine crop of runner beans was produced. Last year the caretaker had a hive, of bees. Colour has been provided by asters sweet william ? wallflowers phlox and chrysanthemums.. Australia House also has a roof garden the pride of which was a good crop of tomatoes.
British Safety Invention
A new British invention is claimed to lie the most effective of all devices for safeguarding workers from injjury by machines, reports the Technical Journal of Machinery. This is "Spectolmanu," a drill guard manufactured by a London firm. All British factories, are governed by strict regulations designed to protect workers from injury by machines and many machines have safety guards built into them. The new guard has the advantage, that it can be automatically adapted to any length of drill.
'Record' Situation
With the acute shortage of. modern Accords which is at present obtaining in New Zealand, 'fanciers of 'canned music' are having some difficulty in keeping abreast with the latest numbers. However, for anyone within this sphere, small towns arc. by far the best bet. Records are m. .such short supply in the cities that many music shops will buy modern second-hand records for upwards of 75 per cent, of their original price. The smaller towns more the size of Whakatane and Opotiki arc more fortunate. Whether it is the fact that they receive a more liberal quota for their size 5 or whether it is just that thex'e are less the fact remains that the purchaser stands a much better chance of getting what he wants here than in Auckland.
Cats Eat Sea-birds
Just south of North Cape, states "Forest and Bird " is an isolated
place where thousands of sea-birds make their homes. Among them is the. beautiful white-fronted tern, which is so plentiful that when they settle down for the night they appear to cover acres of ground. For years past these birds have nightly roosted here but their old-time security is hreatened by the presence of hundreds of wild which have been observed to prey upon the birds. These cats grow into very fierce animals, and it is a brave dog that will attack them. It is not only the sea-birds that are threatened, for the cats climb the trees and devour the young of many other birdsi.
