RUBBISH COLLECTION

EARLIER DATE SUGGESTED

COUNCIL DECLINES REQUEST

In the report of the Health inspector (Mr A. R. Knights) to the Wha'katane Borough Council a request Avas made that -the rubbish collection, 'which is to commence on April 1945, in order to coincide with the beginning of the financial year be put into operation on December l t 1944, in order to avoid

the. nuisance and unpleasantness of refuse lying around during the hot

weather

The Council decided against this His Worship the Mayor (Mr B. S. Barry) pointing out that as the town had been without a regular rubbish collection for so long, a few more months would make, very

ttle difference. The institution of

the service six months earlier than anticipated would also make, for a large amount of additional office work and reorganisation which would be unnecessary if the schedule already made out was adhered to.

In connection with the. above the

Town Clerk sought advice as to the basis of charging for the. service. He pointed out that where there were several occupiers of a building owing to a number of office suites,,

it would scarcely seem fair to charge all occupiers unless they were utilising the service. There would be many who would never need to despatch rubbish away.-

The Council decided to impose a minimum charge of 15s per tin per property or in the event of more than one office, requiring the service from the one building, the charge to be per tin, according to the number put out for collection.

Cr Warren asked if the Council had done anything towards procuring a set of tins suitable for collec-i tion.

Cr Sullivan: Oil drums- will have to do in the until we get the chance to get the iron.

Cr Morpeth: I would like to see the tins uniform. There's nothing worse than to see tins of all descriptions lining the streets on collection day. .

Cr SUapley said there was no possibility of getting a release of the galvanised iron which was needed for rubbish tins at present.

The Town Clerk advised that the Health Inspector was interesting himself in the matter and might have some information later.
