FURTHER TRIBUTES

LATE MR T. J. CUMMINGS

BOROUGH COUNCIL SPEAKS

Before commencing the usual business last Monday, the Mayor at the Borough Council meeting mentioned the loss sustained in the death of the late. Cr T. J. Cunimings, who he said had occupied a prominent public position, in the town for 30 years and later was a Borough Councillor and as District Coroner. The, community as a whole, had suffered a severe loss, said Mr Barry, who went on to say, that though their late colleague did not have much to say at meetings,, when he did it was always sound and to the point. The Council was definitely the, poorer for his. passing.

The Deputy Mayor, Cr S. S. Shapley added, his tribute to the. late Cr Cummings friendliness and sound advice to young men commencing business in the early days.

Cr Sullivan saidx that the, late Mr Cummings had been an excellent citizen outside his duties as a police officer. His family had done more for this country than was realised. Two brothers had in turn occupied the, highest position the. police force could give in New and he felt that had he broken away from Whakatane, he too might have qualified to high office.

Cr Canning spoke of the great friendship of the Maoris for the late Cr Cummings, after which a motion of sympathy moved by His Worship to the bereaved family was carried in the usual all present .standing in silence.
