WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

MONTHLY MEETING The. monthly meeting of the Whakatane, Women's ln.slilute was held in the Caledonian Hall on Tuesday November 7. Mrs V. Stewart presided over a good attendance, oi' members and .several apologies were received. A letter was read from Mrs Miller and the report of the Biannual Council meeting was 1 read by Mrs Sims. An invitation was also received from the, Taneatua W.I. to attend their birthday party on the 14th in.st. Demonstrations on felt work Ave re. given by Mirs Stewart in the form of and Mesdames Print and Mulliolland demonstrated the. making of posies. The Golden Thread travel talk was gh'en by Mrs Hawken on Honolulu and was followed with interest by the members. The Roll Call Avhicli gave an international touch, "The country I would like, to visit and why" w«s responded to by all present. On display were a number of curios, from other lands. A competition on old photos of members was won by Mrs Lysaght. The sponge competition was won by Mr& Flint. The Garden Circle will be, lield at Mrs Murphy's on November 21. The results of the monthly competitions Avere as follows: Apple chutney t Mrs Hannah 1; Mrs Moran 2. Six green peas Mrs Hannah 1; Mrs FcmiC,!! 2:' The Garden Circle was held at the residence of Mrs Stewart Mrs Fenhell presiding. Seasonal readings on the Avork in the garden and orchard Ave,re read by members' and the culture of dahlias was fully discussed, Mrs Fenncll demonstrating the dividing and planting of the tubers. The "Roll Call on the legend of native trees proved very interesting. A competition Avas won by Mrs Fennell. The monthly competitions Avere as follows: 'A Flower of native tree ; Mrs SteAvart 1. 'B' Lettuce, Mrs Fenne,ll 1. Afternoon tea Avas served by the hostess and a wander around the garden brought a pleasant afternoon to a close.

MEETING AT TANEATUA

Tlie October meeting of the Taneatua Women's Institute was held in the. Taneatua Hall, Mrs Gardner presiding over a good attendance of members. The afternoon >va& arranged by the Gardening and took the l'orm of a Spring Flowc,r Show. The entries } which were many and varied, were arranged down the centre of the room ? and were greatly admired by members. Mrs Holloway and Miss Percy kindly considered to judge all classes. The meeting opened with the Institute song and the Aspirations, read by Mrs Logan. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed and correspondence dealt with. Mrs Anderson and Mirs Gardner.were elected as delegates to the Council meeting to be held in Waimana. Arrangements were made for the forth-coming Drama Festival and for the Institute Birthday to be held on Tuesday, ; November 14. An appeal for soldiers' par-j eels and the Leper Fund met with J a ready response. The roll call "A Verse About Flowers" was only poorly responded to, and a flower guessing competition \va& won by Mrs A n do ir on . liesuUs of the Flower Show were: Best. Freezia: M«rs Grey; Best Anemone: Mrs Moore; Best Shrub Flower: Mrs Grey; Best Polyanthus: Mrs Doran; Best Iceland Poppy: Mrs Logan; Best Flower not Stipulated: Mrs Grey; Best Tulip: Mrs. Gardner; Va&e for FlTeet: Mrs Grey: Best Posy: Mrs Grey: Be-t Daffodil: Mrs Peebles; Best Pot Planl: Mrs Grey; Collection of Vegetables: Mrs Doran. 'Results of monthly competitions' were.: 'A' Lemon cheese, Mrs Moore 1: Mrs Grey 2. 4 B' Shoulder Spn.y, Mrs Grey 1; Mrs Moore 2. 'C' Best flower Mrs Grey 1; Mrs Gardner 2. After a delicious afternoon ten served by the hostesses, Mesdanv.s Peebles Shaw and the meeting closed with the National Anthem.

Gardening Circle The September meeting of the Gardening Circle was lie:cl at. Mrs Dorau's residence. Minutes of the previous meeting were read confirmed and arrangements, fin illsed for the Institute Flower Show, Members were each given a packet of seeds, the plants from these to be sold for Gardening Circle funds. A competition arranged by Mrs Doran was won by Mrs Adams. After afternoon tea had been served members walked round the wcljkepL vegetable and flower gard and particularly admired a beautiful show of wall flowers.
