ROWING SEASON OPENS
SUCCESSFUL AFTERNOON TRIAL CREWS COMPETE First class weather and a river in excellent shape mainly responsible for the very successful opening of the rowing season in Whakatane which was held on Sunday afternoon. A number of visitors were present and the rowers displayed' good form in the various races and trials which Avere held, a yery keen interest being shown in these by the spectators. In opening the Mr J. Gattsche extended a Avelcome on behalf of the club members ta all those A r isitors Avho Avere present. Summing up the previous he commented on the Junior Club which had been formed under the guidance of Messrs Morpeth, Fisher and himself. This- he said, Avas very successful under Mr W. Rivett as Club Captain who f together Avith his committee had helped place it. in a sound financial position. Referring to the membership of the Whakatane Club Mr Gattschc said that it had groAvn considerably since the commencement and another successful season Avas anticipated. He also extended a hearty Avelcome home to seA'eral club members Avho have returned from overseas, and } touching a more sombre note ) called for a fcAv moments silence, in respect, for those Avho Avould not return. In conclusion, he extended thanks to all those who had helped the club, financially and otherwise and offered his best AA'ishes for a successful season. Four creAvs competed altogether in a series of races. The results of these Avere as folloAVs: — . Sliapley, Mickel and Gattsche (cox) beat Parry, Goodall 5 Taylor f Maxwell and Smith (cox). Butler Hunt Rivett } Mickel and Ellis (cox) beat MaxAvell, Smith, King a HeAvitt and Dines (cox). Butler, Hunt Rive.tt f Mickel and Ellis (cox) beat, HcAvitt t Kahui and Taylor (cox). The members of the winning ercAvs are to receive photographs Avhlch Mr Hayward has very kindly offered to donate. At '.i p.m. afternoon tea which came as a most enjoyable refresher, AA'as served. This Avas dispensed by the Ladies' Committee who are to be congratulated on their effort. All indications point to another successful season and the enthusiasm of the members especially the younger ones, seems to herald an excellent future for the sport in this tOAvn.
