SUCCESSFUL APPEAL
ST. JOHN AMBULANCE BRIGADE SUM OF £117 RAISED As in the past, the Whakatane public responded wt)ll to • the appeal by the St. John Ambulance Brigade which' took place last Friday. In all, a total of ' £117 16s lOd was subscribed throughout the day by various and the executive iis deeply grateful for the remarkable support still so much in evidence for their cause. From early morning, collectors were busy working amongst, the shoppers in the Strand the most enthusiastic being the young High School girls who possibly ran up the record number of sales. Compared with last year' the appeal showed a definite impr6vement. of approximately £15. People gave willingly and without hesitation, realising probably the splendid work for which the Brigade has been responsible. Something of the extent of its operations over the past twelve months may be. gleaned from the following figures:— 5, 500 miles traversed over 72 runs; 57 accident cases were collected and taken to hospital under emergency conditions. The committee is highly gratified with the result of the day's activiand in the words of Superintendent Ramson, feels warmly encouraged to carry on with the project of the new hall now speedily rising on the corner of King and Haig Streets.
