Sir^ —I take exception to the weak attitude of the majority of our County Councillors in their remarks on the stand taken by the Monganui County Council re Hospital Rateswhen Cr McCready asked for at least some moral support if not fundamental support. If the time is not ripe j when will it be? What decisions should be taken or con.templated to stem this flow of dictatorship of. the debt system as applied to the farming community? Our Avorthy chairman says "when the question is well backed and organised we can accomplish things-! ,. Yes we can get down off the rail and cheer! ... I would like to quote from the Northern Advocate (Whangarei). The ex-chairman of the. Whangarei County Council, who is now the chairman of the Whangarei Hospital Board stated that the last time he met the Minister for Healthy he (the. Minister) said that «,' owing to political opposition he was not. in a position to make any offer of assistance, although the levy had increased 130 per cent. Unanimous support, was given to the resolution forwarded by the Borough. A pity bur Borough is not impregnated with the same spirit. He goes on to that he is of the opinion that if we cannot stop this rapid. increase in taxation on the ratepayit will become steeper in the future. Other methods are being introduced by the Department from time to time. Cr Clark said that we owe it to the ratepayers whom we represent to protest vigorously ■ (there is no vigour in our council) against the trend of hospital taxation. Cr Dysart: It seems to be a form of extortion and the ratepayer is paying for too much for the.bene- * fit of other people! Cr Carter: It is the duty of any local body to keep on protesting. Cr Powell: It is only part of a policy to make the man ' on the land pay for everything.
