WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT OTAKIRI

The monthly meeting of the Otakiri Women's Institute was held in the Ota'kiri Hall on Wednesday, October Mrs Armstrong presiding over a good attendance. The meeting was opened with the "Ode to Friendship." This, was a special meeting in the form of a "Hospital Day." All entries in the competitions were sent to the Whakatane Hospital. The hall was a real picture of ilowers*. Remits for the Council meeting were discussed and delegates for t,his meeting were elected. Mrs F. Mayo and Mrs Hampton were chosen. A most interesting talk on First Aid was given by Mrs Cowie and was greatly enjoyed by all and as. a mark of appreciation she was presented by Mrs Armstrong with a beautiful shoulder spray and small gift. . Mrs Hamilton j Mrs Major and Mrs Parry were welcomed as new members. The trading stall had a wonderful variety of goods and brisk business J was done by Mrs Winters who was in charge. The Hospital Gift Box competition was Avon b}' Mrs A. Smith and we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate her 011 her wonderful effort. This box contained everything a patient could wish for. There were pots of jam, butter honey sweets, bars of chocolate, fruit writing material flow'-- ' > 1 ers and many other useful articles most artistically arranged in a cellophaned covered box. The sponge cake competition was a great success and there were enough entries to enable the whole of the hospital patients to each have a share of these good things. The arranged bunch of flowers also met with the- same generous response and there were sonic truly gorgeous blooms to be seen. All the entries and competition entries were taken to the hospital next da3 r by Mrs Armstrong, where she was met by the Matron and was very enthusiastically received. A dainty afternoon tea was served v by Mrs G. Murray and Mrs W. Murray and the singing of the National Anthem brought a most successful meeting to a close. The months competition winners were as follows: —Best llower: Mrs Armstrong 1; Mrs W. Murray 2; Mrs Hampton 3. Best vegetable: Mrs Lord 1; Mrs Hancock Mrs Smith :j. Hospital Gift Box: Mrs Smith 1; Mrs Peck 2; Mrs Mac'krell !j. Sponge: Mrs Peck 1; Mrs Armstrong 2; Mrs Miss-en H. Arranged bunch of flowers: Mrs W. Murray I; Mrs Lord 2; Mrs Missen 3. We would like to remind members that next month's Roll Call is for gifts for the Christmas tree to lie held at the December meeting for member's children. Please make this a spcial effort and Go enable our children to have iv little more pleasure and happiness.
