SUGAR TWICE WASTED
Even Lord Chief Justice. Caldecote thought the case, "had an ele-> ment. of comedy about it" when the Court of Criminal Appeal at London. heard the case of Henry Pad--wick a canteen manager, who was lined for making fudge from waste .sugar ami then fined again for wasting sugar. Padwick's protest Avas against his second and his appeal Avas successful. Padwiclc collected sugar SAveepings from his canteen, boiled them down skimmed off the dirt and j ' made fudge. So he was fined for selling sweets without demanding coupons. As he left the lower Court after being fined lie shoAvered waste sugar over a police inspector's car. He was then charged AA'itli wasting food. Padwiek asked the Appeal Court how lie could be coirvicted for wasting sugar which had already been wasted. .The. appeal Judges did not answer this one but they squashed his conviction on the grounds that he had not been allowed to deAelop his defence in the lower Court. *
