MAIZE SUBSIDY
NO FURTHER INCREASE
MINISTER'S REPLY
The maize, growers at a meeting held last week were unanimous in that the subsidy of sixpence per bushel for next season's crop granted by the Government was "too little and too late" to encourage increased planting.
It was thought, to extend the Government an opportunity to reconsider the position while there was still time to plant and a resolution from the meeting was sent to the Minister of Agriculture, requesting the subject be re-exam,-ined also indicating that the reac-f tion to the figure offered would not be. conducive to production.
A telegraph reply was received by Mr chairman of the from the Minister as fol-
loavs:—
"I regret to learn that meeting of maize growers consider subsidy granted for next season's crop inadequate. Position was- thoroughly investigated before decision was made and reconsideration cannot now be given for coming season's, planting. I would appreciate your strongest endeavours towards increasing acre, age 'in this essential crop."
Mr Sullivan M.P. who has used i his best endeavours throughout the past months to arrive at a satisfactory decision also confirmed the finality to the matter.
The New Zealand market at the present time is very far short of re-> quirements i so it is hoped that all growers will respond to the best of their ability to meet the Minister's request for increased cropping.
