Irresponsibles

An example of. the. irresponsibility of some persons was demonstrated at Edgecumbe on Saturday evening when or more probably severa people, set themselves out to system atically take the valves out of ear* and cycles outside the, hall. As i some 20 bikes and a number of vehicles were tamperec with. A further instance of petty thieving occurred in Whakatane. on Saturday evening. when the light? from two bicycles left outside, the theatre -in the stand disappeared. Acts of this type are not only mean and petty but are also inconveniencing and a direct reflection on the community in which they occur.

Question in House

The supply of house fittings was raised by Mr W. Sullivan (National Bay of Plenty) in notice, of a ques tion in the House of Representatives . He asked the Minister of Works' if it was correct that instructions had been issued for the manufacture and supply of certain types of door locks and fittings re; quired for Government houses, suet items to be provided by tender by local manufacturers. Mr Sullivan said British manufacturers . todaywere seeking such orders. Informa tion revealed that articles of this nature could be imported for less than half the cost, of the locally manufactured article, and that being so, was it not preferable to import such lines and assist* in keeping building costs down?

Patriotic Parcels

A rather interesting lesson in tie duct-ion was contained in an airgraph from Lieut. B. I. which was received by the secretary of the Whakatane Patriotic Committee. Lieut. Fulton stated that when a distribution of parcel; was made recently he received a verj acceptable one labelled Bay of Plenty which however, contained no mention of the packers name 01 the town from which it had come. The only clue to its point of origin was a newspaper which wasi used a; packing, namely ? a copy of the BEACON. Accordingly, thanks were returned to Whakatane. The, writer went on to say that the periodical distribution of parcels is eagerly anticipated by the boys overseas and that the gifts serve as a strong link with home.
