What ho ?i what ho ma hearties. Well I thought Whakatane was burning up over the week-end. The first fire I noticed was one down at the Heads on Saturday nigh I. I thought at first it might he. a house 'hut after I had i'oeussed my super duper diamond studded chromium plated jewelled in ten holes telescope, 011 the spot I saw that it was a huge bonfire and" gathered all round it were. Girl Guides Brownies and what-nots for as far as the eye could see. Then I remembered that * the Girl Guide 21st anniversary was last week and that a bonfire had been prepared in order to help 'eelebrate it. So that was that. But you can imagine the surprise I felt when on Sunday afternoon I again saw huge columns of smoke and flame rising over in the direction of the mainland. Out came my telescopc again with special focul eyepiece attached (so that I can see. without getting up from my deck chair) again, and what did I see but. half the Western end of Hillcrcst going up in smoke. I watched all afternoon till it was finally put and I saw quite a lot of you sailors watching it too. I even noticed some up helping to douse the flames. Yes, the cre.w certainly seems to be a handj T lot. I shall know who to call on if the Good Endeavour ever catches on fire. As a result of all this Whakatane seems to be just smothered in smoke so lets hope we don't have any more fires (L' mean accidental ones) for a while. Well as Old' Saltwater lias not been in this week I have no more news to tell you. He will probably djjpp in some time within the next two or three days so perhaps I •will be able to continue "with his story next week. Cheerio for now. P.T.W. It was very unfortunate that I missed most of your session this time. I was j,ust going to tune in when suddenly I happened to look at the earth wire n and what do you think had happened? Butinsky had been very busy trying to eat it and had made a proper mess of it. Any-i way I scratched round furiously looking for another bit of wire, but by the time I had found a piece the .session was nearly over and 1 just caught about the last two minutes of it. However, no matter what happens if.' I have to stand guard
