OHOPE SETTLEMENT
LEGALISING FORESHORE ROAD COUNTY COUNCIL AGREES In a communication to the Whakatane County Council last the Chief Surveyor (Auckland) states that he has been approached by Mr McCarthy, surveyor of What katane ' regarding a subdivision which it was proposed to carry out at Ohope Beach. The letter continues: "Having in mind that on a former occasion the Department was not. prepared to recommend similar subdivisions, 1 referred the matter to the Surveyor*' General, who now informs me that he thinks the time has arrived for mpre security in regard to access being given to the owners of lots whose only access is by way of right-of-way along the foreshore West of Cliff Road. He is, therefore, of the opinion that action should now be taken to legalise a road along the foreshore. Such road would, of course, have to be above, the limits of tidal action. Consequently, I should be glad if your Council would kindly favour me with its views on this and I would appreciate it if your surveyor could supply a sketch showing where, in his such a road should be located in order that the Department may be in a position to judge whether closer subdivision would be justifiable or desirable in the land Avhich would be available between the foot of the cliffs and such new road. The Council after a brief discussion resolved that, the Chief Surveyor be. advised that in view of the special circumstances, it approves 'pot-handle' subdivisions., but that with each such subdivisions the owner executed an agreement itt the Council's undertaking to, give the sea frontage on stable land, for road purposes.
