WANDERING STOCK

SUGGESTED POUND FOR

WAIMANA

ALLEGED CRUELTY TO COWS

It was during the County Council's discussion on straying stock that Cr D. Butler brought to light a surprising state of affairs which apparently exists and has been existing in his district on and oft" foi' some time. Maori owners of stock, said Cr Butler, frequently neglected their cows so much as to turn them loose on the. road and even forget to milk them. \

He instanced several eases, in which the cows with bursting bags, had hung round his shed when milk-

ing operations were in process and out of sheer kindness his employees had brought them in with the herd and relieved them of their milk.

Councillor were strong in their condemnation of this which was described as wanton cruel which unfortunately appeared to be happening all too frequently.

The chairman: This sort of thing should be reported to the police for action. It is straight out cruelty !

The, question of the establishment of a permanent pound at Waimana as a measure to offset the growing number of animals which were allowed to wander at large was referred to the. engineer for report on cost of the suggested section adjoining Mr Morton's cottage also that report indicate if ther section suggested was suitable. Further that, report be also submitted bj' the County Engineer on general suitability and condition ctf Taneatua Pound.

In the ease of a request, from G. Kirkbride, asking the Council as controlling body to take the necessary action to prevent stock from straying on Kirkbride's Road, the Council decided to take no action.
