GIRL GUIDES ANNIVERSARY WEEK

SATURDAY, October Ist, marks the commencement of the week's celebrations which will be observed by all units of the Girl Guide movement throughout the Dominion, to mark the twenty-first anniversary of the Association in this country. The week's festivities will commence with the lighting of a chain of bonfires in all centres where there are Guide Companies. Whakatane will mark the occasion by the splendid idea of lighting a bonfire at the Heads, a feature which has been made possible by the collection of the logs and driftwood into a huge pile. We have no doubt that the local beacon will be one of the brightest and largest held anywhere. A short programme will also take place and it is hoped that the public which is cordially invited will attend in force and enjoy the novelty of the year. The following Saturday the Committee has planned the staging of the first Guide Rally to be held in Whakatane. All details are now nearing completion and an effort will be made to hold in this connection the largest parade of youth organisations yet seen in the town. A procession will be held at 1L45 down the Strand, ,with Guides from Tauranga, Te Puke, Opotiki and Whakatane taking part. Scouts from the town and district troops will also participate, and with bands at appropriate intervals the sight schould be well worth seeing. The Rally will consist of the usual march past of all units, to be followed by typical Guide competitions covering ambulance work, knotting, cooking and signalling. Simpler competitions will also be held for the Brownie Packs. The whole event promises to be exceptionally bright and inviting, and there can be no doubt that the public will afford it the full support it deserves.
