PRESIDENT'S REPORT
WHAKATANE CRICKET ASSN.
LAST YEAR'S ACTIVITIES
In his annual report to the Rangir taiki Cricket. Association, now the Whakatane. Cricket Association, Mr L. R. Spring j president stated as follows:—
After the lapse of two years, cricket was revived in. the district un-. der the control of the Association and in spite, of the difficult circuma successful season was ex-? perienced and a full programme was completed satisfactorily.
Activities: Eight clubs affiliated with the Association and five placed teams in the field. The Collins Shield was on byi the Whakatane United Cricket the Clarke Shield by the Central Cricket. Club and the Allen Cup by the, Waimana Cricket Club. Mr Gayler's Trophy was won by a member .of the Waimana Club and the Burnett Cup and Mr Spring's Bat by a member of the Whakatane United Cricket Club. Congratula* tions are. to the clubs and players- concerned. A team representative of the Association played two games, with the Rotorua Association for the Atrill Cup. In the first game at Rotorua, rain stopped play when the match was at an interesting stage. In the second game at Whakatane, the Rotorua Association sportingly offered to make it a cup maitclv and in this your Association was such cess-ful after an enjoyable game. The Association's B team was. also successful against Rotorua B side. The Rotorua Association wrote expressing deep appreciation of the arrangements made at Whakatane and are particularly desirious that these games will be continued in th(» future. Finance: The season finished with a credit balance of £8 Is 6d. It was anticipated that initial expenses' would be. heavy but that the main consideration should be to get the game established again so that returning members will have something fluent to return to and not have the. work of re-establishment. Considering that, this object has been achieved, the position should be considered most satisfactory. Bay of Plenty Association: It Is felt by your Association that the revival of the. Bay Association at this juncture would be wise. Ai move in this direction by delegates of the Association would be in the best interests of cricket. Valedictory: Since the end of the season a our ' secretary, Mr Geo. Smart has> left the district and we would like to express our appreciation of his untiring efforts in the interests of the. game.
Social: The Rotorua teams were , entertained at a dinner and at the end of the season a Smoke. Concert was held .jjtt which the trophies were presented.
In we would impress upon members that although last season's activities augurs well for the future of cricket in. post-war years j it will require much greater effort and the wholehearted co-op-eration of all clubs to attain our primary object—i.e. a firmly established thriving Association and a high standard of cricket in full op-, eration at the completion of hostilities.
