FINAL OF DUFg CUP Keen interest was shown by the public in the final Duff Cup match which was played on, Saturday at Te Tcko between the two teams Otakiri 'and Edgeumbe Seniors. Edgecumbe won the toss and played with the wind and sun behind them. Otakiri kicked off and the Edgecumbe backs immediately started a passing movement which, was spoilt by a forward pass. From the scruivOtakiri hooked the ball to the half,, Gardiner, who found the line at halt' way. From the line out the referee awarded Edgecumbe a free kick. Laurie took a shot at, the goal but missed narrowly. From the Otakiri kick off Phillips the burly Edgecumbe forward, started a forward rush, but was soon stopped by the sound defence of the Otakiri backs. Gardiner found the line with a good kick. From the line the Edgecumbe half, Atarau y got possession, passed to Anderson, to Laurie but 3> forward pass to Villis spoilt the movement. From the scrum Edgecumbe hooked the ball out to the half, who passed to Anderson and through to Laurie who made a good run to score wide out. Phillips kiclf missed and the scoreboard, read: '
Edgecumbe 3 t Otakiri 0. At this stage of tlxe game both packs of forwards were working hard. From the kick off the Edgecumbe forwards, carried play into Otokiri's 25, but Colebrook (Edgecumbe) being caught off side spoilt Edgecumbc's chance of scoring. Gardiner with a good kick found the half way mark. From the line out the Edgecumbe forwards led by ' Phillips, carried play back to Otakiri's 25 but an in-' fringcment by Otakiri gave Edgecumbe. a free kick. Anderson made no mistake about finding the up j rights and half-time found the score at 6—o in Edgecumbc's favour. Edgecumbe kicked off and tho Otakiri forwards carried play to Edgecumbc's 25 but the rush was stopped by Villis who found the line with a good. kick. From the line out the ball came, out to the Otakiri backs but. mishandling spoil* the movement. From the scrum Otakiri hooked, but fast breaking by the Edgecumbe forwards stopped the movement. Gardiner found the line. From the, line out the Otakiri forwards led by Woods took play right under the Edgecumbe goalpost. but the Edgecumbe fullback, New'dick, saved the situation with a good kick to touch. From the line out the Edgecumbe forwards carried play back to the. Otakiri 25. Suddenly Anderson picked up and passed to Laurie who dived over the? line to score the final try of the game. Anderson's kick missed the bar, and the final reading of the scoreboard was: —■ Edgecumbe 9 f Otakiri 0. Mr L. Anderson was successful with the whistle.
TROPHY PRESENTATION WINNERS OF DUFF CUP At the conclusion of the Otakiri v Edgecumbe match, the final round for the Du(l' Cup,, which was played at Te Te'ko on Saturday the presentation of the trophy to the Edgecombe team took place. The captain of the. winning side received the. cup from Mr R. Park, the Te Tcko Club delegate who in
making the presentation, apologised for tlie unavoidable absence of Mr F. Burt ? President of the Rangitaiki Rugby Union. He extended his congratulations to both teams for the spirit in which the match was played and commented upon the excellent effort which had been made by Otakiri. This year was the first that they had fielded a senior team in the Rangitaiki competition. Three cheers were then called for the winners and were heartily responded to. In conclusion the speaker cxtcmb ed his thanks to the Edgecumbc branch of the St. John Ambulanec Association for their attendance at the matches and mentioned the excellent work which had been done by this body throughout the season in the Rangitaiki Rugby Union area.
