THE "GOOD ENDEAVOUR" LEAGUE FOR YOUNG READERS ONLY

— £j T^>\ r*~ I l^^l'^b oar d f° r Goodwill Cruise

What ho' wliat ma hearties. Well I think I liavo a little more space now so I will he able to tell you some more ol' Od Saltwater's. adventurcs Avhile. on his trip to Africa. Most of what Old Saltwater says you can take with a grain of salt as he's inclined to stretch thing's a little but [' have a fair idea how much of it is fact and how much is fiction. Well I think I liad got to the part where Old Saltwater's ship the "Oh-Ha-Ha," was dipping gently along the Equator with a German submarine in tow. They had not gone very far when they sighted a funny little, ship on the horizon which appeared to be sinking at a fast rate (the ship was I mean not the horizon) . As it approached closer they Avere amazed to see that it was a Chinese, junk and packed full Avith Chinese Pirates. The pirates Avere all leaning oA'er the side hold-

ing a Persian carpet over n large hole "which had been pushed in the bows. It appeared that they had been sailing along at a steady rate of a knot or two and not looking where the3 T were going (this was in the middle of tlie, night) when they had suddenhr run smack into the Tropic of Cancer and so badly dented their bows- that they had had to hold a carpet over it ever since to keep the water out. When the junk reached the "Oh-Ha-Ha" the Chinese captain jumped aboard and started talking as one would expect in Chinese. Now Old Saltwater can speak Chinese like nothing on earth so lie was immediately called up to the bridge to translate. It appeared that the captain wanted the submarine in placc of the and was

quite prepared to buy it. Old Saltwater's captain thought that was a good idea too and after a lot o!' hard bargaining the deal was done. The sub had been swopped for the leaky two pairs of Chinese pyjamas., the, water-logged Persian carpet a bent a pair of tennis balls and a half share in a Chinese'night club in Hongkong. The pirates, sailed away in the submarine and were

soon out of sight. It was. not till then that the "Oh-Ha-Ha's" captain found how he had been swindled. Tlie junk sunk, the water-logged Persian carpet fell apart, there were no buttons on the pyjamas, the bent cutlass broke, the tennis balls wouldn't bounce and the night club had been taken over by fllb Japanese four years before." The captain ot the '"Oh-Ha-Ha" was furious, but there was not. much he could do about it then so the sub was written off as a deacl loss. Well T think I have overrun my space a bit so I had better say cheerio for this week. P.T.W.

PETER THE WHALER of WHALE ISLAND
