Collection of Agar

At least 200 families in New Zealand are now engaged in collecting agar seaweed as. a profitable sideline. More than 70 tons of weed were collected last year, and the manufacture of agar which was once virtually a Japanese monopoly began in Christchurch in July last. year. The New Zealand agar is; being used for culture media and for meat canning, and has been found quite satisfactory for both purposes. Manufacturers of condensed cosmetics and pharmaceutical preparations have also reported favourably on it.
